21B3 In the name of Allah, the most gracious and merciful. Prophet, fear^MS Allah and do not obey^MS the disbelievers and hypocrites. Allah is all-knowing and wise.

Follow^MS your^MS Lord's inspiration to you^MS. Allah is aware of your^MP deeds.

Trust in Allah. Allah is an adequate guardian.

*** Allah did not give any man two hearts in his chest, and he did not make the wives you^MP divorce into your^MP mothers. He did not make your^MP adopted sons your^MP real sons. Those [only] your^MP sayings with your^MP mouths. Allah speaks the truth, and guides on the path.

*** Call^MP them by their^MP fathers’ names. That is more just to Allah. If you^MP do not know their fathers, [call them] your^MP brothers in religion and your^MP relatives. You^MP are not to blame if you^MP at fault in this unless you^MP did it intentionally. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

The prophet is closer to the believers than their^MP own souls, and his wives are their^MP mothers. Blood relatives^MP are closer to each other in Allah’s book than believers and emigrants. However, you^MP should treat your^MP friends kindly. That is written in the book.

We made a covenant with the prophets, as well as with you. We made a strong covenant with Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa son of Mariam,

so that he may ask truthful people about their truthfulness. He prepared painful torment for the disbelievers.

Believers, remember Allah’s blessings to you^MP, when troops came against you^MP and we sent a wind against them, as well as troops you^MP did not see. Allah sees your^MP deeds.

They came upon you^MP from above you^MP and below you^MP, sight became dim and hearts were in throats. You^MP imagined wrong thoughts about Allah.

There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe earthquake.

The hypocrites and those with sick hearts said, “Allah and his messenger promised us only vain hopes.”

One group of them said, “People of Yathrib, you^MP have no place, so go^MP back. Another group of them asked the prophet’s permission. They said, “Our houses^F are exposed,” whereas they^F were not exposed. They^MP only want to flee.

If they^MP were attacked from their^F sides, and they^MP were asked to defect, they^MP would have come to them^F and not remained^MP long.

They^MP had promised Allah beforehand that they would not turn back. Promises to Allah are a responsibility.

Say^MS, “Fleeing will not help you^MP, if you^MP flee death or murder. Otherwise, you^MP would only enjoy it for a while.”

Say^MS, “Who can preserve you^MP from Allah, whether he wants to do bad things to you^MP or have mercy on you^MP?” They will find no helper or savior besides Allah.

21B4 Allah surely knows the hinderers among you^MP, and those who tell their brothers, “Come to us.” They rarely come to fight,

being greedy of you^MP. When fear comes upon them, you^MS see them looking to you^MS. Their eyes roll like someone fainting on the verge of death. When fear goes away, they abuse you^MS with sharp tongues, greedy^MP for good things. They do not believe, and Allah has made their works vain. That is easy for Allah.

They think that the groups have not gone, and when the groups come, they wish that they were desert nomads, asking about your^MP news. Even if they had been among you^MP, they would only have fought a little.

You^MP have a good example in Allah’s messenger for those who hope in Allah and the last day, and who remember Allah frequently.

When the believers saw the groups, they said, “This is what Allah and his messenger promised us. Allah and his messenger were right.” This caused them to increase in faith and submission.

Some believing men are honest in what they promise Allah, some of them fulfill their vows, and some of them wait, and do not change at all.

May Allah reward the honest for their honesty, and torment the hypocrites if he wills, or accept their repentance. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

Allah sends disbelievers back, furious because they got no spoils. Allah is sufficient for the believers in battle. Allah is strong and mighty.

Allah cast down from their castles the people of the book who assisted them, and put fear in their hearts. Some of them you^MP kill, and some of them you^MP take as prisoners.

He made you^MP inherit their lands, houses and money, a land you^MP had not set foot upon. Allah can do anything.

Prophet, tell your^MS wives, “If you^FP want^FP this world and its glamor, come^FP. I will provide for you^FP and divorce you^FP graciously.

But if you^FP want Allah, his messenger and the hereafter, Allah has prepared a great reward for those of you^FP who do good.

Wives of the prophet, if one of you^FP commits promiscuity clearly, she will have double the torment. That is easy for Allah.

22A1 We will give a double reward to those among you^FP who are devout in obedience to Allah and his messenger, and do righteous deeds. We have prepared a generous provision for them.

Wives of the prophet, you^FP are not like another^MS woman. If you^FP are godly, do not use^FP coarse speech, or someone with a sick heart may desire. Speak^FP kindly.

Sit^FP quietly in your^FP houses, and do not dress up^FP as in the days of former ignorance. Perform^FP prayers, pay^FP the poor-tax, and obey^FP Allah and his messenger. Household, Allah wants to put abominations far from you^MP and purify you^MP.

Remember^FP Allah’s signs and wisdom that are read in your^FP houses. Allah is kind and aware.

Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward for men and women who submit, men and women believers, devout men and women, truthful men and women, men and women who endure, humble men and women, men and women who give alms, men and women who fast, chaste men and women, and men and women who mention Allah frequently.

No believing man or woman has a choice in their matter once Allah and his messenger have decreed a matter. Whoever disobeys Allah and his messenger has clearly gone astray.

When you^MS told the one blessed by Allah and blessed by you^MS, “Keep your^MS wife and fear^MS Allah,” you^MS hid in your^MS soul what Allah had shown and feared^MS people. Allah is more worthy of being feared. When Zayd had done what was necessary for her, we married you^MS to her, so that believers would be blameless regarding the wives of their adopted sons if they do what is required for them^FP. Allah’s order was carried out.

The prophet is not to be blamed regarding Allah’s commands, regarding the custom of those who passed away beforehand. Allah’s command is a determined decree.

Those who deliver Allah’s messages fear him, and fear no one else besides Allah. Allah is a sufficient reckoner.

Muhammad was not the father of any of your^MP men, but Allah’s messenger, and the seal of the prophets. Allah knows everything.

Believers, remember Allah frequently.

Worship him morning and evening.

He and his angels bless you^MP, to bring you^MP out of darkness into the light. He is merciful to believers.

The greeting they will be given on the day they meet him is “Peace.” He has prepared a generous reward for them.

Prophet, we sent you^MS as a witness, a bearer of good news, a warner,

a caller to Allah by his permission, and a shining lamp.

Give believers the good news that they have Allah’s great grace.

Do not obey^MS disbelievers and hypocrites. Ignore^MS their harm, and trust^MS in Allah. Allah is a sufficient protector.

Believers, if you^MP marry believing women and then divorce them^FP before you^MP have sex with them^FP, there is no time period you^MP have to wait. Make provision for them^FP and divorce them^FP graciously.

Prophet, we have allowed you^MS to marry your^MS wives when you^MS have paid their^FP dowry, as well as slave girls you^MS own from spoils Allah has given you^MS, as well as any daughters of your^MS paternal uncles and aunts, daughters of your^MS maternal uncles and aunts who emigrated with you^MS, or any believing woman who gives herself to the prophet, if the prophet wants to marry her. This is a special privilege for you^MS, and not for the believers. We know what we decreed for them^MP about their^MP wives and the slave girls they own, so that you^MS would be blameless. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

22A2 You^MS can put away those you^MS want, and bring to yourself^MS those you^MS wish. If you^MS want one of them that you^MS have sent away, you^MS are blameless. That way, it is more likely to comfort them^FP, so that they^FP would not sorrow, but rather be pleased^FP with your^MS gift to each of them^FP. Allah knows what is in your^MP hearts. Allah is all-knowing and gentle.

Beyond that, women are not allowed for you^MS, nor can you^MS exchange them^FP for other wives, even if their^FP beauty pleases you^MS, except for slave girls you^MS own. Allah watches over everything.

Believers, do not go into the houses of the prophet until you^MP have been given permission to eat, without looking^MP for a convenient opportunity. If you^MP are invited, enter^MP, and when you^MP have finished eating, disperse^MP, not asking^MP permission to speak. That would harm the prophet and he would be ashamed of you^MP. Allah is not ashamed of the truth. If you^MP ask them^FP for something, ask^MP them^FP from behind a curtain. That is purer for your^MP hearts and their^FP hearts. You^MP should not harm Allah’s messenger, or ever marry^MP his wives after him. That would be a great sin to Allah.

Whether you^MP reveal something or hide^MP it, Allah knows everything.

There is no blame for them^FP in front of their^FP fathers, their^FP sons, their^FP brothers, their^FP brothers’ or sisters’ sons, their^FP maidservants or their^FP slaves. Fear^FP Allah, for Allah is witness of everything.

Allah and his angels bless the prophet. Believers, bless him and greet him.

Those who harm Allah and his messenger are damned by Allah in this world and the hereafter. He has prepared shameful torment for them.

Those who harm men and women believers undeservingly have taken slander and clear guilt upon themselves.

Prophet, tell your^MS wives, your^MS daughters, and the believers’ wives to draw^FP their^FP robes around them^FP, so that it would be more likely that they^FP would be known and not harmed^FP. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

22A3 If the hypocrites, those with sick hearts, and those who cause commotion in the city do not stop, we will incite you^MS against them^MP. Then they^MP will live nearby you^MS in it only for a short while,

damned. Wherever they are found, they will be seized and slaughtered,

as is Allah’s custom regarding those who passed away beforehand. You^MS will find no change in Allah’s customs.

People ask you^MS about the hour. Say^MS, “Only Allah knows about it.” He does not tell you^MS about it, because the hour might be soon.

Allah has damned the disbelievers and prepared a burning fire for them,

where they will be forever. They will not find a helper or savior

on the day their faces are turned over in hellfire. They will say, “If only we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the messenger.”

They said, “Our Lord, we obeyed our masters and leading men, and they led us astray from the way.

Our Lord, give them twice as much torment, and damn them greatly.

Believers, do not be like those who harmed Musa, though Allah vindicated him from what they said. He was highly exalted with Allah.”

Believers, fear Allah and speak^MP an opportune saying.

He will make your^MP deeds good and forgive your^MP sins. Whoever obeys Allah and his messenger has won the great victory.

We offered a trust for safekeeping to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, and they refused to bear it, and feared it. Mankind took it, and they were unjust  and foolish,

so Allah will torment men and women hypocrites and men and women idolaters, but will accept the repentance of men and women believers. Allah is forgiving and merciful.
