18A4 In the name of Allah, the most gracious and merciful. A chapter we revealed and imposed. We revealed miraculous signs in it, so that youMP may remember.
0
2
WhipMP both the adulteress and the adulterer with 100 lashes. Do not have compassion on them in Allah’s religion, if youMP believe in Allah and the last day. Let a group of believers witness theirD torment.
0
3
An adulterer should only marry an adulteress or a polytheistFS and an adulteress should only marry an adulterer or a polytheistMS. That is forbidden for believers.
0
4
WhipMP the unbelieving people who throw [accusations] at chaste married women, and then cannot bring four witnessess, with 80 lashes, and thereafter do not accept their testimony at all, for they are unbelieving.
0
5
The exception is those who later repent and make amends. Allah is forgiving and merciful.
0
6
Those who throw [accusations] at their wives, and do not have witnesses besides themselves shall testify by Allah four times that he is telling the truth,
0
7
and must take a fifth oath that Allah’s curse be upon him if he is lying.
0
8
Her torment will be averted if she testifies four times that he is lying,
0
9
and a fifth oath that Allah be angry with her if he is telling the truth.
0
10
If Allah’s grace and mercy had not been on youMP, and if Allah had not been the wise acceptor of repentance …
0
11
A group of youMP lied. Do not thinkMP that it is evil for youMP. It is better for youMP. Every man of them will pay for his guilt. Those who take upon themselves a greater part of it will have great torment.
0
12
When youMP had heard it, why did the male and female believers think well of themselves, and say, “This is clearly a lie.”
0
13
Why did they not bring four witnesses? Since they did not bring witnesses, they are liars in Allah’s eyes.
0
14
If Allah’s grace and mercy had not been on youMP in this world and the hereafter, youMP would have been touched by great torment for yourMP exaggeration,
0
15
since youMP received it on yourMP tongues and speak what youMP know nothing about with yourMP mouths. YouMP think it is easy, but it is a serious matter with Allah.
0
16
When youMP heard it, why did youMP not say, “We cannot speak of this. May youMP be glorified. This is serious slander.”
0
17
Allah warns youMP not to repeat such a thing ever again, if youMP are believers.
0
18
Allah makes his signs clear to youMP. Allah is all-knowing and wise.
0
19
Those who like promiscuity to be spread among believers will have painful torment in this world and the hereafter. Allah knows, and youMP do not know.
0
20
If Allah’s grace and mercy had not been on youMP, and Allah had not been compassionate and merciful…
0
21
18B1 Believers, do not follow Satan’s footsteps. Satan commands those who follow his footsteps to do promiscuous, immoral things. If Allah’s grace and mercy had not been on youMP, none of youMP would ever be pure, but Allah purifies those he wills. Allah hears all and knows all.
0
22
Do not let those among youMP who have grace and have the ability swear off giving to their relatives, the poor, and the sojourners in Allah’s path. Let them pardon and forgive. Do youMP not want Allah to forgive youMP? Allah is forgiving and merciful.
0
23
Those who throw [accusations] at unaware, believing, chaste married women are damned in this world and the hereafter. They will have great torment
0
24
on the day their tongues, their hands, and their feet testify against them because of their deeds.
0
25
On that day, Allah will repay them their true debt, and they will know that Allah is the Clear Truth.
0
26
Impure women are for impure men and impure men are for impure women. Pure women are for pure men, and pure men are for pure women. TheyMP are innocent of what they say. TheyMP will have forgiveness and a generous provision.
0
27
Believers, do not enter houses that are not yourMP houses before youMP ask permission and greetMP the family in them. That is better for youMP, so that youMP may remember.
0
28
If youMP do not find anyone in them, do not enter them before being given permission. If youMP are told, “GoMP back!” then goMP back. It is purer for youMP. Allah knows yourMP deeds.
0
29
It is not wrong for youMP to enter uninhabited houses that youMP have goods in. Allah knows what youMP show and what youMP hide.
0
30
TellMS believersMP to lower theirMP gaze and guard their private parts. That is holier for them. Allah is aware of what they do.
0
31
TellMP believersFP to lower theirFP gaze and guard theirFP private parts, and not to show their beauty, except for what is evident. Let them draw their coverings over their cleavage and not show their beauty except to theirFP husbands, theirFP fathers, theirFP fathers-in-law, theirFP sons, theirFP step-sons, theirFP brothers, the sons of theirFP brothers or sisters, theirFP women, theirFP slaves, servantsMP who are eunuchs, or a child whoMP does not know about women’s nakedness. Let themFP not stomp their feet, to make known what adornment theyFP hide. All believers, repentMP toward Allah so that youMP may succeed.
0
32
MarryMP off the unmarried among youMP and the righteous female and male slaves. If theyMP are poor, Allah will enrich themMP with his grace. Allah is omnipresent and all-knowing.
0
33
Let thoseMP who do not find the means to marry remain pure until Allah enriches themMP with his grace. As for those who want to betroth yourMP slaves, legally free them if youMP see something good in them, and give them some of the money Allah has given youMP. If yourMP girls want to remain pure, do not force themFP into prostitution so that youMP can seek temporal goods of this world. As for those who compel them, Allah is forgiving and merciful after the compulsion.
0
34
We have revealed to youMP signs, clear things, a parable from those who passed away before youMP, and an admonition to the godly.

35
18B2 Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth. His light is like a lamp in a niche in the wall. The lamp is in a glass container, and the container is like a shining star, lit by a blessed olive tree that is neither eastern or western. Its oil would almost shine even without fire touching it. [It is] light upon light. Allah guides those he wills to his light. Allah tells parables to people, and Allah knows everything.
0
36
Allah’s name is remembered in houses of worship he has permitted to be built. He is praised there morning and evening.
0
37
Business or sales do not distract [those] men from remembering Allah, performing prayers, and paying the poor-tax. They fear a day when hearts and sight will be changed
0
38
so that Allah may reward them better for the best of their works, and increase his grace to them. Allah provides bountifully to those he wills.
0
39
The works of disbelievers are like a mirage on a flat plain, which a thirsty person thinks is water until he gets to it and does not find anything. There he finds Allah, who repays him his reckoning. Allah is swift in reckoning.
0
40
*** Or they are like the deep sea darkness, covered by waves upon waves, above which are clouds. There are layers of darkness above others. If he puts his hand forth, he will barely see it. He whom Allah does give light does not have any light.
0
41
*** Have youMS not seen how everything in heaven and earth praises Allah? The birds are lined up, every one knowing its own prayer and glorifying. Allah knows what they do.
0
42
*** The kingdom of the heavensand earth is Allah’s, and Allah is their destiny.
0
43
*** Have youMS not seen that Allah drives the clouds, then joins them together, then heaps them up, and youMS see rain coming through them. He sends down hail from mountains in the sky, and afflicts those he wills with it, keeping it away from those he wills. The splendor of his lightning is almost blinding.
0
44
Allah turns over the night and the day. There is a lesson for those who can see.
0
45
*** Allah created every living creature from water. Some of them walk on their bellies, some walk on two legs, and some walk on four. Allah creates what he wills. Allah can do anything.
0
46
*** We revealed signs and clear things. Allah guides those he wills to a straight path.
0
47
They say, “We believe in and obey Allah and the messenger.” Then later a group of them turns away. They are not believers.
0
48
If they are called to Allah and his messenger, to be judged among them, a group of them turn away.
0
49
If they are in the right, they come to him submissively.
0
50
Do they have sick hearts? Do they doubt? Or are they afraid Allah and his messenger will wrong them? They are the wrongdoers.
0
51
When they were called to Allah and his messenger to be judged among them, the believers said, “We hear and obey.” They are successful.
0
52
Those who obey Allah and his messenger, are afraid of Allah, and fear him, will be the winners.
0
53
18B3 SwearMP serious oaths by Allah. If youMS command them to go out, sayMS, “Do not swearMP. Obedience is a favor. Allah knows yourMP deeds.”
0
54
SayMS, “ObeyMP Allah and obeyMS the messenger.” If theyMP turn away, he has his burden, and youMP have yourMP burden. If youMP obey him, youMP will be guided. The messenger is only responsible to proclaim clearly.
0
55
Allah promises to make believers among youMP who do righteous deeds become regents on earth as he made those before them regents, to strengthen their religion, which pleases him, and to replace their fear with safety. They worship me, and worship nothing else. Those who disbelieve after that are unbelieving.
0
56
PerformMP prayers, payMP the poor-tax, and obeyMP the messenger so that youMP may be shown mercy.
0
57
*** Do not thinkMS that disbelievers can be frustraters on earth, since their abode will be hellfire, an awful destiny.
0
58
*** Believers, yourMP slaves and those who have not reached puberty should ask yourMP permission on three occasions: before the dawn prayers, and when youMP put off yourMPclothes from midday heat, and after evening prayers, the three times of nakedness. Besides these, youMP and they will not be blamed when youMP go around each other. Thus Allah clarifies the signs to youMP. Allah is all- knowing and wise.
0
59
When the children among youMP reach puberty, let them ask permission as those before them did. Thus Allah clarifies his signs to youMP. Allah is all-knowing and wise.
0
60
Post-menopausal women who have no hope of marriage are not to be blamed when they take off their clothes, not showing adornment. To be chaste is better for them. Allah hears all and knows all.
0
61
It is not wrong for the blind, the lame, the sick, or yourselvesMP that youMP eat in yourMP houses, yourMP fathers’ houses, yourMP mother’s houses, yourMP brothers’ houses, yourMP sisters’ houses, yourMP paternal uncles’ houses, yourMP paternal aunts’ houses, yourMP maternal uncles’ houses, yourMP maternal aunts’ houses, or houses youMP own the keys to, or yourMP friend’s house. It is not wrong for youMP to eat together or apart. If youMP enter houses, greetMP each other with Allah’s blessed, good peace. Thus Allah clarifies his signs to youMP, so that youMP may comprehend.
0
62
Believers are those who believe in Allah and his messenger. If they are with him on a common matter, let them not go away until they ask permission. Those who ask permission are those who believe in Allah and his messenger. If they ask youMS permission about some matter of theirs, give permission to those of them youMS want, and askMS Allah’s forgiveness for them. Allah is forgiving and merciful.
0
63
Do not callMP the messenger as youMP call each other. Allah knows those of youMP who sneak toward shelter. Let those who disobey his command beware lest temptation strike them, or they be afflicted with painful torment.
0
64
Is not everything in the heavens and the earth Allah’s? He may know what state youMP are in. On that day, they will return to him and he will tell them what they did. Allah is all-knowing.
