The English Reference Qur’an

In the name of Allah, the most gracious and merciful. ALM.

There is no doubt about that book. It is guidance to the godly,

who believe in the unseen, perform prayers, and donate some of our provision to them.

They believe in what we revealed to you^MS and what we revealed before you^MS and they are certain of the hereafter.

They are guided by their Lord and are successful.

Disbelievers will not believe, whether you^MS warn them or not.

Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and covered their sight. They will have great torment.

Some people say, “We believe in Allah and in the last day,” but they are not [really] believers.

They try to fool Allah and the believers, but they only fool themselves, and do not even realize it.

They have sick hearts, and Allah made them sicker. They will have painful torment for their lies.

When they were told, “Do not cause destruction on the earth,” they said, “But we are reformers!”

They are truly corrupt and do not realize it.

When they were told, “Believe like other people have believed,” they said, “Shall we believe like fools?” They are the [real] fools, but they do not know it.

If they meet believers, they say, “We have believed.” But when they are alone with their devils, they tell them, “We are with you^MP. We were only mocking.”

Allah will mock them, and will increase their tyranny as they stray.

They have exchanged guidance for error, and their trading was unprofitable. They were not guided.

They are like those who light a fire, and when it shines around them, Allah takes away their light and leaves them in darkness, where they cannot see.

Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return.

Or [they are] like a cloud in the sky with darkness, thunder, and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears because of the lightning bolts, afraid of death. Allah surrounds the disbelievers.

*** The lightning almost blinds them. Whenever it shines, they walk by its light. When it is dark, they stand still. If Allah had willed, he would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Allah can do anything.

*** People, worship your^MP Lord who created you^MP and those before you^MP, that you^MP may be godfearing.

He made the earth as a bed for you^MP and the sky as a building. He sent rain from the sky, and through it, brought forth fruits as provision for you^MP. So do not knowingly make^MP rivals for Allah.

If you^MP are in doubt concerning our revelation to our servant, bring a chapter like it, and call your^MP witnesses besides Allah, if you^MP are telling the truth.

If you^MP do not do that, and you^MP never will do it, beware^MP of hellfire which burns people and rocks; it was prepared for disbelievers.

Give^MS good news to the believers who do righteous deeds: they will have heavenly gardens with flowing rivers underneath. Every time they get fruit as provision from it, they say, “This is what we were provided with beforehand.” They were given similar to it. There they will have purified kinds and live there forever.

1A2 Allah is not ashamed to tell a proverb about a mosquito or something bigger. Believers know  that it is truth from their Lord, but disbelievers say, “What did Allah mean by this?” It is a proverb that leads many astray and guides many. It only leads the unbelievers astray.

Those who break Allah’s covenant after it is confirmed, sever what Allah commanded to be joined, and cause destruction on the earth are lost.

How can you^MP disbelieve in Allah when you^MP were dead and he made you^MP alive? Later, he will make you^MP die, then make you^MP alive, and then you^MP will be returned to him.

He created everything on the earth for you^MP, and then sat down in heaven, and he made them into seven heavens. He knows everything.

When your^MS Lord told the angels, “I will make a regent on earth,” they said, “Will you^MS put someone there who will cause destruction on it and shed blood, while we glorify, praise, and sanctify you^MS?” He said, “I know things you^MP do not know.”

He taught Adam all the names and then showed them^MP to the angels. He said, “If you^MP are telling the truth, tell^MP me the names of these.”

They said, “May you^MS be glorified! We know nothing except what you^MS have taught us. You^MS are all-knowing and wise.”

He said, “Adam, tell^MS them^MP their^MP names.” When he told them^MP their names, he said, “Did I not tell you^MP that I know the unseen things of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you^MP show and what you^MP hide.”

When we told the angels, “Bow^MP down to Adam,” they all bowed down, except for Iblis, who refused and was proud. He was a disbeliever.

We said, “Adam, live with your^MS wife in the heavenly garden and eat^D of it freely wherever you^D want, but do not approach^D this tree, or you^D will be wicked.”

Satan made them^D stumble from it, and he expelled them^D from where they^D were. We said, “Go^MP down, enemies to one another, and on earth you^MP will have a temporary place of stability and livelihood.”

Adam received words from his Lord, who accepted his repentance. He is the merciful acceptor of repentance.

We said, “All of you^MP go down from it. When my guidance comes to you^MP, those who follow my guidance will neither fear nor grieve.”

Disbelievers who reject our signs will go to hellfire, where they will be eternally.

People of Israel, remember the blessings I gave you^MP. Fulfill^MP my covenant, and I will fulfill your^MP [part of the] covenant. Be^MP terrified of me.

Believe^MP in my revelation, which confirms what you^MP have.Do not be^MP the first disbeliever in it, and do not sell^MP my verses for a small price, but fear^MP me.

And do not cover^MP truth with vanity or knowingly hide^MP the truth.

Perform^MP prayers, pay^MP the poor-tax, and kneel^MP together.

1A3 Do you^MP command others to be righteous and forget^MP yourselves, though you read^MP the book? Do you^MP not comprehend?

Seek^MP help in endurance and performing prayers. It is a major issue, except to the humble

who think^MP they will meet their Lord. They will certainly return to him.

People of Israel, remember^MP the blessings I gave you^MP. I preferred you^MP above all mankind.

Fear^MP a day when no soul will benefit another, nor will its intercession be accepted, nor will a ransom be taken from it. They will not be saved.

When we rescued you^MP from the family of Pharaoh, he treated you^MP with evil torment, slaughtering your^MP sons and keeping your^MP women alive. That was a great trial from your^MP Lord.

When we divided the sea for you^MP, we rescued you^MP, and drowned Pharaoh’s family as you watched.

When we made an appointment with  Musa for forty nights, you^MP chose the calf after that, and were^MP wicked.

Afterwards, we pardoned you^MP so that you^MP may give thanks.

We gave Musa the book and the criterion, so that you^MP may be guided.”

Then Musa told his people, “My people, you^MP have wronged yourselves^MP by taking^MP the calf, so repent^MP to your^MP creator and kill^MP yourselves. That would be better for you^MP with your^MP creator." Then he accepted their repentance. He is the merciful acceptor of repentance.

Then you^MP said, “Musa, we will not believe in you^MS until we see Allah plainly.” Then lightning overtook you^MP as you^MP watched.

Then we resurrected you^MP after your^MP death, so that you^MP might give thanks.

Then we overshadowed you^MP with the cloud and sent you^MP down manna and quail. “Eat^MP of the good things we have provided you^MP.” They did not wrong us, but they wronged themselves.

So we said, “Enter^MP this village and eat freely from it wherever you^MP want.” Enter^MP the door bowing down, and say^MP, “Relief!” We will forgive your^MP faults and increase the generous.

The wicked substituted one saying they had been told for another, so we sent a plague from heaven down on the wicked for their unbelief.

1A4 When Musa asked for a drink for his people, we said, “Strike the rock with your^MS staff," and twelve springs broke forth from it. All the people knew their^MP drinking place. Eat^MP and drink^MP from Allah’s provision, and do^MP not trouble and cause^MP destruction on the earth.

When you^MP said, “Musa, we will not endure one food. Pray to your^MS Lord for us. Let him bring forth for us legumes, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions that the earth brings forth.” He said, “Will you^MP trade what is good for what is less? Go^MP down to Egypt. You^MP can have your^MP request.” Abasement and misery struck them. They have brought Allah’s anger upon themselves, because they disbelieve in Allah’s signs and wrongfully murder the prophets. This was because they disobeyed and attacked.

Truly believers, the Jews, the Christians, and Sabeans who believe in Allah and in the last day and who do righteous deeds have their reward from their Lord, and will not fear or grieve.

When we made a covenant with you^MP and raised the mountain  over you^MP, “Take what we give you^MP firmly and remember^P what is in it, so that you^MP may be godfearing.

Then you^MP turned away afterwards. If not for the grace and mercy of Allah toward you^MP, you^MP would have been lost.

You^MP know those of you^MP who transgressed the sabbath, so we told them, “Be despicable monkeys.”

We made them a warning for what was in front of them and behind them, and an admonition for the godfearing.

[Remember] when Musa told his people, “Allah commands you^MP to sacrifice a heifer.” They said, “Are you^MS kidding us?” He said, “Allah forbid that I would be ignorant.”

They said, “Pray to your^MS Lord for us that he would clarify for us what she is.” He said, “He says that it is a heifer, neither old nor virgin, but middle-aged, so do as you^MP are told.

They said, “Pray to your^MS Lord for us to clarify to us what color she is.” He said, “He says it is a yellow heifer, bright yellow-colored, pleasing to look at.”

They said, “Pray to your^MS Lord for us, to clarify for us which one she is. The heifers look alike to us. If Allah wills, we will be guided.”

He said, “He says it is a cow never yoked to plow the ground, nor to water the furrows, whole and without blemish.” They said, “Now you^MS have brought the truth,” so they sacrificed it, but they almost did not.

When you^MP killed a person and fought about it, Allah brought to light what you^MP hid.

So we said, “Make^MP a comparison with him with a part of it^F. Thus Allah gives life to the dead and shows you^MP his signs, so that you^MP would comprehend.

Then your^MP hearts were hardened after that. They were as hard as stone or harder, for some stones have had rivers break forth from them; some give water when split; and others fall down in the fear of Allah. Allah is aware of your^MP doings.

1B1 Do you^MP expect that they will be true to you^MP when some of them heard Allah’s message and then knowingly altered it after they comprehended it?

When they meet believers, they say, “We believe,” and when they are alone among themselves, they say, “Do you^MP tell them what Allah explained to you^MP so they dispute with you^MP about it with your^MP Lord?” Do they not comprehend?

Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they announce?

Some of them are unlettered, knowing only a little of the book. They only guess.

Woe to those who write the book with their hands and then say, “This is from Allah,” to sell it for a paltry sum. Woe to them for what they wrote and woe to them for their gain.

They said, “Hellfire will not touch us except for a few days.” Have you^MP made a covenant with Allah that he will not break? Or do you^MP say what you^MP do not know about Allah?

Truly those who do bad deeds, and are caught in their faults, will be in hellfire eternally.

Those who believe and do righteous deeds will go to heaven eternally.

So we made a covenant with the people of Israel: You^MP will worship Allah alone, do good to parents, relatives, orphans and the poor. Tell^MP people what is good, perform prayers and pay the poor-tax. Then all except a few of you^MP turned away in aversion.

So we made a covenant with you^MP. You^MP do not shed your^MP own blood, and you^MP do not expel yourselves from your^MP own houses. Then you^MP concurred, and you^MP are witnesses.

Then you^MP kill yourselves^MP and expel a group of yourselves^MP from their homes. You^MP assist them in guilt and hostility. If they had come to you^MP as prisoners, you^MP would have ransomed them, while expelling them is forbidden for you^MP. Do you^MP believe in part of the book, and disbelieve in the rest? The reward for those among you^MP who do that is shame in this world, and on the day of resurrection, they will be sent back to the severest torment. Allah is aware of your^MP deeds.

The torment of those who trade this life for the hereafter will not be lightened, and they will not be saved.

We gave Musa the book and made messengers follow him. We brought Isa son of Mariam miracles, and aided him with the Holy Spirit. Whenever a messenger comes to you^MP with a message you do not like, are you^MP proud, calling^MP some of them liars, and murdering^MP some of them?

They said, “Our hearts are hardened.” Allah has damned them for their disbelief. How little they^MP believe!

And when a book came to them^MP from Allah confirming what they have, they used to ask for Allah’s help against the disbelievers. When what they knew came to them, they disbelieved in it. Allah has damned disbelievers.

What they sell their souls for is dreadful: insolently disbelieving in what Allah has revealed, that Allah reveals his grace to those he wills of his servants. They have gotten more and more anger. Disbelievers will have shameful torment.

If they are told, “Believe in what Allah has revealed,” they say, “We believe in what was revealed to us.” They disbelieve in what is beyond that, though it is truth confirming what they have. Say^MS, “Then why did you^MP murder Allah’s prophets beforehand, if you^MP are believers?”

1B2 Musa came to you^MP with miracles, but you^MP chose the calf. You^MP are wicked.

So we made a covenant with you^MP and raised the mountain above you^MP, “Grasp what we bring you^MP firmly and listen.” They said, “We listened and disobeyed.” Then they were made to drink the calf in their hearts because of their disbelief. Say^MS, “What your^MP faith commands you^MP to do is dreadful, if you^MP are believers.”

Say^MS, “If you^MP are certain of the abode of the hereafter free and clear, to the exclusion of other people, then wish for death, if you^MP are telling the truth.”

They will not wish for it at all because of what their hands have done. Allah knows the wicked.

They are the people you^MS will find most desirous of staying alive than a polytheist. One of them wants to live a thousand years, but he will not avoid torment by living long. Allah sees what they do.

Say^MS, “Who is Jibril’s enemy?” He revealed it to your^MS heart by Allah’s permission, confirming what is in his possession, guidance and good news to believers.

Who is an enemy of Allah, his angels, his messengers, Jibril and Mikal? Allah is the enemy of disbelievers.

We have revealed miraclous signs to you^MS. Only the unbelievers disbelieve them.

Whenever they make a covenant, some of them violate it. Most of them do not believe.

And when a messenger from Allah comes to them confirming what they have, some recipients of the book toss Allah’s book behind their backs as if they did not know

and follow what the devils recited about the kingdom of Sulayman. Sulayman did not disbelieve like the devils, who taught people magic; what was revealed to Harut and Marut, the two angels in Babylon. They^D did not teach anyone before telling him, “We are a temptation, so do not disbelieve.” So they^MP learn from them^D how to separate a man and his wife, but they^MP cannot harm anyone with this except with Allah’s permission. They^P also learn what harms them and does not benefit them. They^MP knew that whoever buys it has no share in the hereafter. What they^MP sell their souls for is dreadful, if they only knew.

If they had believed and been godly, Allah would have rewarded them well, if they had known.

Believers, do not say^MP, “Look at us,” but say, “Consider us,” and listen. Disbelievers will have painful torment.

Disbelieving people of the book and idolaters do not want anything good to come down to you^MP from your^MP Lord. Allah assigns his mercy to whom he wills. Allah has great grace.

1B3 *** We will replace a sign that we cancel or cause to be forgotten with another one like it or better. Do not you^MS know that Allah can do anything?

Do not you^MS know that the kingdom of the heavens and the earth is Allah's? You^MP have no helper or savior besides Allah.

Or do you^MP want to ask your^MP messenger as Musa was asked previously? Whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has gone astray from the straight path.

Many of the people of the book wish they could turn you^MP back into disbelievers after you^MP had faith, because they themselves are jealous after truth became clear to them. So pardon^MP and forgive^MP until Allah gives his command. Allah can do anything.

Perform^MP the prayers and give^MP the poor-tax. The good you^MP present to yourselves you^MP will find with Allah. Allah sees your^MP deeds.

*** They said, “Only Jews and Christians will enter heaven.” That is their wish. Say^MS, “Present your^MP proof if you^MP are telling the truth.”

Rather those who submit their faces to Allah and are charitable have their reward from their Lord, and will neither fear nor grieve.

The Jews said, “Christians are without foundation,” and the Christians said, “The Jews are without foundation,” while they read the book. The ignorant speak similarly. Allah will judge between them on the day of resurrection concerning their differences.

Who is as wicked as one who forbids Allah’s name being mentioned in his places of worship and tries to destroy them? They should not enter them without fear. They will have shame in this world and great torment in the hereafter.

The East and the West are Allah's, and his face is wherever you^MP turn. Allah is everywhere and knows everything.

They said, “Allah has taken a boy.” May he be glorified! Everything in heaven and earth is his, and all are subservient to him,

the creator of the heavens and the earth. If he decrees something, he just says to it, “Be,” and it is.

The ignorant said, “If only Allah would speak to us or give us a sign.” Those before them spoke similarly. Their hearts are similar. We have made signs clear to people who are certain.

We truly sent you^MS as a bearer of good news and a warner. You^MS are not responsible for those headed to hell.

*** The Jews and Christians will not be pleased with you^MS until you^MS follow their spiritual path. Say, “Allah’s guidance is guidance.” If you^MS follow their desires after you^MS have received knowledge, There will be no one to protect or save you^MS from Allah.

*** Those to whom we gave the book read it as it deserves to be read, and believe in it. Whoever disbelieves in it is lost.

People of Israel, remember the blessings I gave you^MP, how I preferred you^MP above all mankind.

Beware of a day when no soul will receive anything from another. No ransom will be accepted from it, nor will intercession benefit it; they will not be saved.

1B4 When Allah tested Ibrahim with words, he fulfilled them. He said, “I will make you^MS a leader of men.” He said, “And my descendants?” He said, “My covenant does not extend to the wicked.”

*** We made the sanctuary a reward and safety for people, and they made the place where Ibrahim stood a place of prayer. We made a covenant with Ibrahim and Ismail: purify my house for those who walk around it, the devout and those who kneel bowing down.

*** When Ibrahim said, “Lord, make this a safe city. Provide fruit for its inhabitants who believe in Allah and the last day.” He said, “I will let the disbelievers have pleasure for a short time, then I will force them into the torment of hellfire, a dreadful destiny.

*** Ibrahim and Ismail set up the foundations of the sanctuary: “Our Lord, accept [it] from us. You^MS hear all and know all.

Our Lord, make us submitted to you^MS, and make some of our descendants a nation submitted to you^MS. Show us our rituals, and accept our repentance. You^MS are the merciful acceptor of repentance.

Our Lord, send^MS them a messenger from among them who recites your^MS signs to them, teaches them the book and wisdom, and purifies them. You^MS are strong and wise.

Whoever dislikes the spiritual path of Ibrahim is foolish. We have chosen him in this world, and in the hereafter; he is righteous.

When his Lord told him, “Submit,” he said, “I have submitted to the Lord of the universe.”

Ibrahim commanded his sons and Yaqub about it, “Sons, Allah has chosen your^MP religion, so do not die unless you are submitted^MP.”

Or were you^MP witnesses when Yaqub was on his deathbed, when he asked his sons, “What will you^MP worship after I die?” They said, “We will worship your^MS god and the god of your^MS fathers Ibrahim, Ismail, and Ishaq, one god, and we have submitted to him.”

That nation has passed away. They have what they deserve, and you^MP have what you^MP deserve. You^MP will not be questioned about what they did.

They said, “Be Jews or Christians and you^MP will be guided.” Say^MS, “Rather the spiritual path of Ibrahim, a monotheist. He was not a polytheist.”

Say^MP, “We believe in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was  revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, and the tribes, what was given to Musa and Isa, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not distinguish between any of them, and we are submitted to him.”

If they believe similarly to your^MP belief, they are guided, but if they turn away, they are in disagreement. Allah will suffice you^MS regarding them, and he hears all and knows all.

Allah’s dye; who is better than Allah at dyeing? We are his worshipers.

Say^MS, “Do you^MP argue with us about Allah, when he is our Lord as well as your^MP Lord? We have our works and you^MP have your^MP works, and we are sincere toward him.

Or do you^MP say that Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, and the tribes were Jews or Christians?” Say^MS, “Who knows more: you^MP or Allah? Who is more wicked than he who conceals testimony within himself from Allah? Allah is aware of your^MP deeds.”

That nation has passed away. It has received what it deserves, and you^MP will receive what you^MP deserve. You^MP are not accountable for their deeds.

2A1 Foolish people will say, “What turned them away from their former prayer direction?” Say^MS, “East and West belong to Allah. He guides whom he wills to a straight path.”

We have made you^MP a middle nation, so you^MP can witness against people, and the messenger a witness against you^MP. We made your^MS former prayer direction only so that we could know who would follow the messenger and who would turn around on his heels. It was overwhelming, except for those Allah guided. Allah would not lose their faith. Allah is compassionate and merciful to people.

We may see the turning of your^MS face in the sky. Thus we will certainly turn a prayer direction for you^MS that will please you^MS. So turn^MS your^MS face toward the sacred place of worship, and wherever you^MP are, turn your^MP faces toward it. Those who were given the book know that it is truth from their Lord. Allah is aware of what they do.

If you^MS brought every sign to those who were given the book, they would not follow your^MS prayer direction, and you^MS do not follow their prayer direction, and some of them do not follow each others’ prayer direction. If you^MS follow their desires after knowledge has come to you^MS, you^MS will be wicked.

Those to whom we gave the book know it as they know their children, but a group of them knowingly hide the truth.

Truth is from your^MS Lord, so do not doubt.

*** Everyone has a direction he turns toward, so compete in goodness. Wherever you^MP are, Allah will bring you^MP all. Allah can do anything.

*** Wherever you^MS go out, turn your^MS face toward the sacred place of worship. It is truth from your^MS Lord. Allah is aware of your^MP deeds.

Wherever you^MS go out, turn^MS your^MS face toward the sacred place of worship. Wherever you^MP are, turn^MP your^MP faces toward it, lest people have an excuse against you^MP, except for the wicked among them. Do not fear them, but fear me, and I will complete my blessings to you^MP, so that you^MP may be guided.

We sent you^MP a messenger from among you^MP reading our signs to you^MP,purifying you^MP, teaching you^MP the book and wisdom, and teaching you^MP what you^MP did not know.

So remember^MP me and I will remember you^MP. Thank me and do not disbelieve^MP in me.

Believers, get help from endurance and performing prayers. Allah helps those who endure.

Do not say^MP that those killed in Allah’s path are dead, but alive, though you^MP do not realize it.

We will certainly send you^MP trials of fear, hunger, lack of money and of people and fruit, so give^MS good news to those who endure,

who say when disaster strikes them, “We are Allah’s and will return to him.”

They have their Lord’s blessings and mercy, and they are guided.

2A2 Safa and Marwa are Allah’s ceremonies. It is not wrong for anyone who does a hajj or visits the sanctuary to walk around them. Allah is grateful and all-knowing of those who voluntarily do good.

Allah and the cursers curse those who hide miracles and the guidance we have revealed after clarifying it in the book to people,

except for those who repent and make amends publicly. I will accept their repentance. I am the merciful acceptor of repentance.

Allah, angels and all men have cursed disbelievers who died in their disbelief.

They will be there forever and their torment will not be lightened, nor will they be given more time.

Your^MP god is one god. He is one god, the most gracious and merciful.

The creation of the heavens and the earth, the difference of night and day, the ship that sails the sea to benefit men, the rain Allah sends down to give life to the dead ground and to send every living creature into it, sending off the winds, and the clouds kept between the sky and the earth are all signs to people who comprehend.

*** Some people take rivals to Allah, and they love them as much as they love Allah. Believers love Allah more. If the wicked only knew when they see the torment that all power is Allah’s and that Allah is severe in torment!

The leaders will disown the followers. They will see torment and were at their wits end.

The followers said, “If we had another chance, we would disown them just as they disowned us. Thus Allah will show them how sorrowful their works are to them. They will not leave hellfire.

*** People, eat what is permitted and delicious on earth. Do not follow Satan’s steps; he is a clear enemy to you^MP.

He commands you^MP to do evil and promiscuity, and to say things about Allah you^MP do not know.

If they are told, “Follow^MP what Allah has revealed,” they say, “Rather we will follow what we found our fathers doing.” Even if their fathers did not comprehend anything, and were not guided?

Disbelievers are like a man who screams to what hears nothing except for a prayer and a call. They are deaf, dumb, and blind; they do not comprehend.

Believers, eat the good things we provided you^MP and thank Allah, if you^MP worship him.

He has forbidden you^MP dead animals, pork, and meat offered to other gods. If someone is forced unwillingly and unintentionally, he is not guilty. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

Those who hide part of the book Allah has revealed and sell it for a small price will feed their bellies nothing except hellfire, and Allah will not speak to them on the day of resurrection, nor purify them. They will have painful torment.

*** Those who exchange guidance for straying and forgiveness for torment  are patiently seeking hellfire.

*** That is because Allah revealed the book in truth, and those who differed about the book are deeply divided.

2A3 *** Righteousness is not a matter of turning your^MP faces eastward or westward. Rather, righteousness is believing in Allah, the last day, the angels, the book and the prophets, giving money in his love to relatives, orphans, the poor, travelers, and beggars, freeing slaves, performing prayers, paying the poor-tax, keeping their promises, and enduring misery and adversity. In misery, such people are honest and godly.

Believers, punishment is prescribed in the case of those murdered: a free person for a free person, a slave for a slave, a female for a female.  If a brother pardons anything, it should be followed by kindness and good deeds to him, and will be lightening and mercy from your^MP Lord. Whoever is hostile after that will have painful torment.

Through punishment, you^MP will have life, so that you^MP thinkers may be godfearing.

If any of you^MP is close to death, and leaves possessions, he is to will them kindly to his parents and relatives, as an obligation for the godly.

Those who change it after hearing it are guilty. Allah hears all and knows all.

He who fears that a person making a will is going to deviate or be guilty and reconciles them is not guilty. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

Believers, Allah commanded fasting for you^MP just as he commanded it for those who were before you^MP so that you^MP would be godly:

for a number of days. If someone is sick or traveling, a few other days. For those who can bear it, a ransom by feeding a poor person. If someone voluntarily does good, it is better for him. Fasting is better for you^MP, if you only^MP knew.

The month of Ramadan is when the Qur’an was revealed as guidance to men and miracles of  guidance and the criterion. Whoever witnesses the month should fast it. Whoever is sick or traveling, several other days. Allah wants it to be easy for you^MP, not hard, so you^MP can complete the period, praise Allah for his guidance to you^MP, and give thanks.

If my worshipers ask you^MS about me, I am near, answering the call of him who prays when he prays to me. They should answer me and believe in me in order to be guided.

Sex with your^MP wives is permitted on the night of a fast. They are clothing to you^MP and you^MP to them. Allah knows that you betrayed yourselves, so he relented toward you and pardoned you. So now, have sex with them and desire what Allah has ordained for you^MP. Eat^MP and drink^MP until you^MP can distinguish a white thread from a black one in the dawn, then complete^MP the fast until nightfall. Do not have sex with them while you^MP are secluded in the places of worship. These are Allah’s boundaries which should not be approached. This is how Allah shows people his signs so that they would be godfearing.

Do not waste your^MP money on worthless things or bribe^MP rulers with it  to wrongly and knowingly take people’s money.

2A4 They ask you^MS about new moons. Say^MS,“They are times for people and for hajj. It is not right to approach houses from the back. Rather righteousness is being godly and approaching houses from their doors. Fear^MP Allah, so that you^MP may succeed.

Fight^MP in the path of Allah against those who fight you^MP, but do not be^MP aggressors. Allah does not love aggressors.

And kill^MP them wherever you discover them, and expel^MP them from wherever they expelled you^MP. Sedition is worse than murder. Do not fight^MP them at the sacred place of worship unless they fight you^MP in it. If they fight you^MP, kill them. That is the reward of disbelievers.

If they stop, Allah is forgiving and merciful.

Fight them until there is no more sedition and religion is Allah’s. If they stop, there should be no aggression except toward the wicked.

The sacred month: for the sacred month and punishment for forbidden things, whoever attacks you^MP, attack them as you^MP were attacked. Fear^MP Allah and know^MP that Allah is with the godfearing.

Donate your^MP money in the path of Allah, and do not spread destruction, but do good. Allah loves those who do good.

*** Do your^MP hajjes and minor pilgrimages for Allah. If you^MP are prevented, then send what gifts are easily obtained, and do not shave your^MP heads until the gift arrives. If one of you^MP is sick or has a head injury, then he can be ransomed by fasting or alms or a sacrifice. If you^MP are safe, whoever breaks^MS his purification between the minor pilgrimage until the hajj should offer what gifts he can easily give, or if he cannot, he should fast three days during the hajj, and then seven when you^MP return. Those are ten days in all. That is for those whose families are not present at the sacred place of worship. Fear^MP Allah and know^MP that Allah is severe in punishment.

The hajj is in known months, and for him who does the hajj upon them^FP, there should not be any impurity, unbelief, or argument on the hajj. Allah knows the good deeds you^MP do, so make^MP provision. Godliness is the best provision, so you thinkers must be fear me.

*** Seeking grace from your^MP Lord is not wrong. If you^MP are overflowing from Arafat, remember Allah at sacred Mashaar; remember him just as he guided you^MP even if before that, you^MP went astray.

Then overflow^MP  from the place people overflowed. Ask Allah’s forgiveness. He is forgiving and merciful.

*** When you^MP have done your^MP sacrifices, remember Allah at least as much as you^MP remember your fathers. Some people say, “Our Lord, give to us in this world.” They have no share in the hereafter.

Others say, “Our Lord, give us goodness in this world and goodness in the hereafter. Protect us from hellfire’s torment.”

Those have the portion they deserve. Allah is swift in reckoning.

2B1 *** Remember Allah on certain days. Whoever is in a hurry in two days is not guilty, and whoever is godly and is late will not be guilty. Fear Allah and know that you^MP will be gathered to him.

*** What one person says about this life will please you^MS. He calls Allah as witness to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest in conflict.

If he turns away, he tried to cause destruction on the earth and devastate fields and descendants. Allah does not love destruction.

If he is told, “Fear Allah,” his pride leads him to sin. He is headed to hell, a dreadful destination.

Some people give themselves up, desiring Allah’s pleasure. Allah is compassionate toward his servants.

*** All you believers, enter in peace, and do not follow the steps of Satan; he is a clear enemy to you^MP.

If you^MP go astray after receiving miracles, know^MP that Allah is powerful and wise.

*** Do they wait only for Allah and the angels to come to them in a shadow of clouds though the matter has been predestined? Matters are referred back to Allah.

*** Ask the people of Israel how many miraculous signs we brought them. Allah is severe in punishment to those who exchange Allah’s blessings after receiving them.

This life has been made attractive to disbelievers, and they scoff at the believers. The godfearers will be over them on the day of resurrection. *** Allah provides bountifully for all he wills.

*** Mankind was all one nation, and Allah sent prophets bearing good news and warnings, and He sent the book with them in truth, to judge between men in the matters in which they differ. The only ones who differed about it were those who received it after miracles came to them, acting insolently. Allah guides believers regarding the truth they differ about with his permission. Allah guides those he wills to a straight path.

*** Or do you^MP think you^MP will enter the heavenly garden when the example of those who passed away before you^MP has come to you? They were afflicted with misery, adversity, and were shaken, so the messenger and the believers with him said, “When will Allah’s salvation come?” Allah’s salvation is close.

*** They ask you^MS what they should donate. Say^MS, “The possessions you^MP donate should be for parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, and the traveler. Allah knows the good deeds you^MP do.

Fighting is ordained for you^MP, though it is repulsive to you^MP. You^MP may hate something that is good for you^MP, or love^MP something that is evil for you^MP. Allah knows but you^MP do not.

They ask you^MS about fighting during the sacred month. Say^MS,“Fighting during it is a serious sin, but blockage from the path of Allah, disbelief in it and in the sacred place of worship, and expelling its residents is a more serious sin to Allah. Sedition is a more serious sin than murder, and they continue to fight you^MP to try to turn you^MP back from your^MP religion if they can. The works of those of you^MP who turn back from your^MP religion and die in a state of disbelief are void in this world and the hereafter. They are headed for hellfire, where they will remain forever.

Those who believe and emigrate and struggle in Allah’s path hope for Allah’s mercy. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

2B2 They ask you^MS about wine and gambling.  Say^MS, “There is serious sin in them^D, and benefit for people. Their^D sin is greater than their^D benefit.” They ask you^MS what they should donate. Say^MS, “Pardon.” Thus Allah makes signs clear to you^MP so that you may consider

this world and the hereafter. They ask you^MS about orphans. Say^MS, “Helping them is good. If you mix things with them, [they are] your^MP brothers. Allah knows the difference between a corrupt person and someone who does good. If Allah willed, he would have harassed you^MP. Allah is strong and wise.

Do not marry idolaters^FP until they^FP believe. A believing^FS slave is better than a polytheist^FS even if she pleases you^MP.Do^MP not give idolaters^MP in marriage until they^MP believe. A believing slave is better than a polytheist^MS,even if he pleases you^MP. They call for hellfire and Allah calls for the heavenly garden and forgiveness by his permission. He makes his signs clear to people, so that they may remember.

They ask you^MS about menstruation. Say^MS, “It is harm, so isolate women during their menstruation, and do not approach^MP them^FP until they^FP are clean. When they^FP are clean, have^MP sex with them^FP from where Allah has commmanded you^MP.Allah loves the repentant and the purifiers.

Your^MP wives are a field for you^MP, so go^MP into your^MP fields however you^MP want, and send^MP it beforehand for yourselves^MP. Fear^MP Allah and know^MP that you^MP will meet him. Give^MS good news to the believers.

Do not make^MP Allah the object of your^MP oaths to be^MP pious, be^MP godly, and do^MP good to people. Allah hears all and knows all.

Allah does not blame you^MP for foolishness in your^MP oaths, but as your^MP hearts deserve. Allah is forgiving and gentle.

To those^MP who swear abstinence from their wives, there is a waiting period of four months. If they^MP return, Allah is forgiving and merciful.

If they^MP insist on divorce, Allah hears all and knows all.

Divorced women shall wait by themselves three menstruations, and they^FP are not allowed to hide what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the last day. Their husbands have more right to bring them back in this if they^MP want to be reconciled. In fairness, they^FP have as many rights as responsibilities. Men are higher in rank than they. Allah is strong and wise.

Divorce can be done twice, then retaining kindly or dismissing generously. You^MP may not take anything you^MP have given them^FP back unless they^D fear they^D will not observe Allah’s limits. If you^MP fear they^D will not observe Allah’s limits, it is not wrong for them^D in her ransom of herself. These are Allah’s limits, so do^MP not exceed them. Anyone who exceeds them is wicked.

If he divorces her, she is no longer allowed to him until she marries another husband. Then if that husband divorces her, it is not wrong for them^D to return if they^D think that they^D can observe Allah’s limits. These are Allah’s limits, which he makes clear to people who know.

If you^MP divorce wives and their^FP time is complete, either take^MP them^FP back kindly or send^MP them^FP away kindly. Do^MP not take them^FP back to harm them^FP, and thus be^MP aggressors. Anyone who does that wrongs himself. Do^MP not mock Allah’s signs, but remember Allah’s blessings to you^MP and what he revealed to you^MP from the book and wisdom by which he preaches to you^MP. Fear^MP Allah, and know^MP that Allah knows everything.

If you^MP divorce wives and their^FP time is complete, do^MP not interfere with their^FP marrying their husbands, if they^MP agree kindly among themselves. That is an admonition for those of you^MP who believe in Allah and the last day. That is holier and purer to you^MP. Allah knows and you^MP do not.

2B3 *** Mothers should nurse their^FP children for two complete years if anyone^MP wants to complete the nursing. Their^FP provision and clothing in kindness are his responsibility. No soul is burdened with more than it can bear. A mother shall not be harmed by her son, nor a newborn’s father by his son. An heir has similar duties. It is not wrong if they^D willingly want to separate after consultation. It is not wrong if you^MP want to have another woman nurse your^MP children,  if you^MP surrender what you^MP gave kindly. Fear^MP Allah and know^MP that Allah sees your^MP deeds.

Wives of those of you^MP who die should wait four months and ten. When they^FP complete their^FP time, you^MP are not to be blamed for what they^FP do with themselves^FP kindly. Allah is aware of your^MP deeds.

*** It is not wrong for you^MP to make offers of marriage to women publicly or to keep^MP it between yourselves^MP. Allah knows that you^MP will mention them^FP, but do not pledge^MP yourselves to them^FP in secret unless you^MP speak a kind saying, and do not make^MP a marriage contract until the time the contract is valid. Know^MP that Allah knows what is within your^MP souls, and beware^MP of him. Know^MP that Allah is forgiving and gentle.

There is nothing wrong with divorcing your^MP wives before you^MP have touched them^FP or paid them^FP their bride price. Let^MP them^FP enjoy as much as possible. He who is in financial straits must give provision kindly according to his means. This is an obligation for those who do good.

*** If you^MP divorce them^FP before you^MP touch them^FP but after you^MP have given them^FP their bride-price, then let^MP them^FP have half of it, unless they^FP forego it or unless the one making the marriage contract foregoes it. If you^MP forego it, it is closer to godliness. Do not forget^MP grace between you^MP. Allah sees your^MP deeds.

*** Take care^MP to perform the prayers as well as the intermediate prayer, and stand^MP devoutly before Allah.

If you^MP fear, then while walking or riding. When you^MP are safe, remember^MP Allah’s name as he taught you^MP before you^MP knew.

Those of you^MP who die and leave^MP wives should have a will, so their^MP wives can enjoy life for a year without being driven out. If they^FP leave, this is a kindness they do on their own and  you^MP are not to be blamed. Allah is strong and wise.

Divorcees^FP should be provided for kindly. This is an obligation on the godfearing.

Allah thus makes his signs clear to you^MP, so that you^MP may comprehend.

2B4 Did you^MS not see how the thousands who left their homes avoided death? Allah told them, “Die^MP.” Then he made them alive. Allah is gracious to people, but most people do not give thanks.

Fight^MP in Allah's path and know that Allah hears all and knows all.

Who can loan Allah a good loan? Allah will repay him many-fold. Allah withholds and he gives forth. You^MP will return to him.

Did you^MS not see how the leaders of the children of Israel after Musa told one of their prophets, “Raise^MS up a king for us and we will fight in Allah’s path.” He said, “If fighting is your^MP destiny, might you not fight?” They said, “How can we not fight in Allah’s path, since we and our children have been forced out of our homes?” When fighting was their destiny, all but a few turned away. Allah knows the wicked.

Their prophet told them, “Allah has raised up Talut as your^MP king.” They said, “How can he be our king? We are more deserving of being king than he. He does not have a lot of money.” He said, “Allah has chosen him over you^MP, and has given him stature in knowledge and body. Allah gives his kingdom to whoever he wills.” Allah is omnipresent and all-knowing.

Their prophet told them, “The sign of his kingdom is that the ark, in which is the presence of your Lord, will come to you^MP, as well as the relic of what the family of Musa and Harun left, carried by angels. That is a sign for you^MP if you^MP believe.”

When Talut divided the troops, he said, “Allah will try you^MP at a river. Whoever drinks from it is not with me, and whoever does not taste it is with me, except for those who scoop out a handful. All but a few drank from it. When he and the believers crossed it together, they said, “We have no strength against Jalut and his troops today.” Those who thought they were about to meet Allah said, “How many small groups have defeated large groups with Allah’s permission? Allah is with those who endure.”

When they showed themselves to Jalut and his troops, they said, “Our Lord, pour out endurance upon us and make our feet firm and save us from disbelieving people.”

So they defeated them by Allah’s permission, and Dawud killed Jalut and Allah gave him the kingdom and wisdom and taught him what he willed. If Allah had not pushed people into each other, the earth would have been destroyed, but Allah shows grace to people.

These are Allah’s signs which we recite to you^MS in truth. You^MS are a messenger.

3A1 *** We preferred some of those messengers over others. Allah spoke to some, and he raised some in degree: We gave Isa son of Mariam miracles, and aided him with the Holy Spirit. If Allah had willed, those after him would not have fought after miracles had come to them, but they differed. Some of them believed, and others disbelieved. If Allah had willed, they would not have fought. But Allah does whatever he wants.

*** Believers, donate^MP some of what we have provided you^MP with before a day comes when there is neither buying, friends, nor intercession. Disbelievers are wicked.

Allah is the only god, living and eternal. He neither slumbers nor sleeps. Everything in the heavens and the earth is his. Who is the one^MS who intercedes with him except by his permission? He knows what is in their hands and what is behind them. They know none of his knowledge except what he wills. His chair covers the heavens and the earth, and protecting them^D does not tire him. He is most high and great.

There is no compulsion in religion. The difference between guidance and error has been made clear. Whoever disbelieves in false gods and believes in Allah has grasped the firm, unbreakable handle. Allah hears all and knows all.

Allah protects believers and brings them out of darkness into light. False gods are the protectors of disbelievers, and they bring them out of light into darkness. They will be in hellfire eternally.

Have you^MS not seen him who disputed with Ibrahim about his Lord, since Allah had given him kingship? Ibrahim said, “My Lord gives life and causes death.” He said, “I give life and death.” Ibrahim said, “Allah brings the sun from the east. So bring^MS it from the west.” The disbeliever was confounded. Allah does not guide wicked people.

*** Or him who passed by a village ruined to its foundations. He said, “How can Allah make these alive after their death?” Allah made him die for a hundred years, then resurrected him. He said, “How long have you^MS stayed?” He said, “A day or part of a day.” He said, “You^MS stayed for a hundred years. Look at your^MS food and your^MS drink. It has not grown moldy. Look at your^MS donkey. We will make you^MS a sign for people. Look how we raise the bones, then cover them with flesh. When he saw it, he said, “I know that Allah can do anything.”

*** Ibrahim said, “My Lord, show me how you^MS give life to the dead.” He said, “Do you not believe?” He said, “Yes I do, but assure my heart.” He said, “Take four birds and turn them toward you. Then put a piece of each on a mountain and call them. They will come quickly to you. Know that Allah is strong and wise.

Those who donate their money in Allah’s path are like a seed that sprouts seven heads, in each of which are a hundred grains. Allah multiplies to whom he wills. Allah is omnipresent and all-knowing.

Those who spend their money in Allah’s path and then do not follow up what they spend with reproach or harm will have a reward from their Lord. They will neither fear nor grieve.

3A2 A kind word and forgiveness are better than alsmgiving followed by harm. Allah is self-sufficient and gentle.

Believers, do not ruin your alms with reproach and harm like one who does not believe in Allah or the last day and donates his money so people will see him. He is like a rock with dirt on it which was rained upon heavily and became hard and dry. They can do nothing with what they deserve. Allah does not guide disbelieving people.

Those who spend their money seeking Allah’s pleasure to establish themselves are like a garden on a hill which was rained heavily upon, then it produced twice as much. If it had not been rained upon heavily, then dew. Allah sees your^MP deeds.

Does any of you^MP want to have a garden with palms and grapes, with flowing rivers underneath, having every kind of fruit, but be suffering from old age, with weak descendants, and then a fiery whirlwind strikes it and it burns up? Thus Allah shows you^MP signs so that you^MP may consider.

*** Believers, donate^MP some of the good things you^MP have earned, and of what we have brought forth to you from the ground. Do not donate the evil part of it that you would not take except by closing your^MP [eyes] to it. Know that Allah is self-sufficient and praiseworthy.

*** Satan promises you^MP poverty and commands you^MP to be promiscuous. Allah promises you^MP his forgiveness and grace. Allah is omnipresent and all-knowing.

*** He gives wisdom to those he wills, and whoever is given wisdom is given much good. But only thinkers remember.

*** Allah knows your^MP donations or gifts as vows. The wicked have no one to save them.

*** If you^MP give alms visibly, how excellent they are. If you hide them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and it covers your bad deeds. Allah is aware of your^MP deeds.

3A3 *** You^MS are not responsible to guide them. Allah guides whom he wills. What property you^MP donate is for yourselves, when you^MP donate only to please Allah. Your donations will be paid back to you^MP, and you will not be wronged.

To the poor who are restricted in the path of Allah since they are not able to travel in the land. The ignorant man considers them rich because of restraint. You^MS will know them by their appearance. They do not ask people repeatedly. Allah knows your^MP donations.

Those who donate their money at night and day in secret and in public will receive a reward from their Lord. They will not fear or grieve.

Those who profit by usury will stand only as one whom Satan kicks by possessing him. That is because they say, “Selling is like usury," yet Allah allowed selling and forbade usury. If an admonition comes to someone from his Lord, and he stops, he has what was previous and his matter is with Allah. Those who repeat will be in hellfire eternally.

Allah annihilates usury and makes alms increase. Allah does not love any guilty disbeliever.

Those who believe, do righteous deeds, perform their prayers, and give the poor-tax have their reward from their Lord and will not fear or grieve.

Believers, fear Allah and leave the usury that remains if you^MP are believers.

If you^MP do not do that, then permit a war from Allah and his messenger. If you^MP repent, you^MP may have your^MP capital. You^MP will not wrong and you^MP will not be wronged.

If someone is in dire straits, then he may have a delay until he prospers. Giving alms is better for you^MP if you^MP only knew.

Beware of a day when you^MP are returned to Allah and every soul will be paid back for what it has gained, and they will not be wronged.

Believers, if you^MP take on a debt to each other for a specific period, write it out. Let a legal clerk write it between you^MP. The clerk should not refuse to write as Allah has taught him. The debtor should dictate and fear Allah, his Lord. Nothing should be omitted from it. If the debtor is foolish, weak, or unable to dictate by himself, let his guardian dictate fairly, and have it witnessed by two men, or if there are not two, by one man and two women you^MP approve of as witnesses. If one^FS of them^D goes astray, the other^FS will remind her. Witnesses should not refuse when they are called upon. Do not disdain^MP to write it, whether a small or large one, for its period. That is more just with Allah, straighter for testimony, and closer to your^MP avoiding doubt, except when it is a current business you^MP manage among yourselves^MP. Not writing that is not wrong. Call witnesses if you^MP sell it to each other and do not let a a clerk or a witness be bothered. If you^MP do, it is unbelief for you. Fear^MP Allah and Allah will teach you^MP. Allah knows everything.

*** 3A4 If you^MP are on a trip and do not find a clerk, let it be pledges received. If you^MP entrust things to each other, the one to whom it was entrusted should take him his pledge. He should fear Allah, his Lord. Do^MP not hide the testimony. Whoever hides it has a guilty heart. Allah knows your^MP deeds.

*** Everything in the heavens and the earth is Allah's. Allah will reckon with you^MP if you^MP show what is in your^MP hearts or if you^MP hide it. He forgives whom he wills and torments those he wills. Allah can do anything.

The messenger believes in what was revealed to him by his Lord, and so do the believers;  they all believe in Allah and his angels and his books and hi messengers. We do not distinguish between any of his messengers. They said, “We have heard and obeyed. Our Lord, [we seek] your^MS forgiveness. You^MS are [our] destiny.”

*** Allah does not burden a soul with more than it can bear. It has [the good] it has earned, and [the evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not blame us if we forget or are at fault. Our Lord, do not make us bear a burden like those before us. Our Lord, do not make us bear more than we have energy for. Pardon^MS us,  forgive^MS us, and have^MS mercy on us. You^MS are our master, so save^MS us from unbelieving people.
